Where have all the bright sparks gone?

I was in ‘Gay Paris’ last week – and to digress immediately – when did it pick up the descriptor ‘gay’?  Any ideas reader?  It was more grey, than gay to be honest, but unseasonably warm and it gave me the opportunity to meet up with an old colleague/friend and discuss the state of the nation.  We covered a lot of ground and drank a lot of wine, but there was a recurring theme during the evening – why are companies full of less than bright people these days?  And more to the point, where have all the bright sparks gone?

T and I have a mutual former employer – and we agreed that we were lucky to be there in ‘the glory days’, booming IT sector, stimulating challenges and always someone ready for a verbal and mental sparring session.  Apparently, it is a shadow of it’s former self these days – and the great names that made it good are all out doing their own thing.  My current company is suffering from the same syndrome – now a sad homage to it’s former position as a leader and innovator in an industry that suffers at the whim of goverment investment and economic downturn – Rail.

Is the answer simply that those who can,  just get up and do – while those that remain are often to be heard bemoaning their fate as unrecognised and unrewarded while the Titantic sinks beneath them?  Help me re-arrange the deck-chairs anybody?
